The Viñalba Patagonia Cabernet Merlot 2009, which is stocked exclusively by The Co-operative, has won an International Trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Viñalba Patagonia Cabernet Merlot, from Rio Negro in Patagonia, Argentina, is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. A wonderfully rich and fruity wine with a complex nose of blackcurrants, dark berries and herbs, it is dark red in colour with rich aromas of black cherries, mint and spices. The palate is well balanced and elegant with bags of ripe fruit and hints of chocolate on the finish.

The wine picked up the International Trophy for Red Bordeaux Varietal Under £10.00.  Judges commented that the wine was “elegant and smooth with a ripe, spicy palate backed up by firm tannins. Juicy with a faint herbaceousness too and a smoky tinge giving prodigious depth.” 

The Decanter World Wine Awards, which reflect regional styles, celebrate diversity, promote value for money and highlight quality around the globe, are the largest international consumer wine competition. Of the 12,000 entries received, only 25 won an International Trophy.

Viñalba Patagonia Cabernet Merlot 2009 is available in selected Co-operative stores nationwide, priced at £8.99 (on offer at £6.99 from 7 December 2011 - 17 January 2012 inclusive).

Additionally, the Cave de Lugny Macon-Villages (£6.99), which is also stocked by The Co-operative, scooped the International Trophy for Chardonnay Under £10.00.
